Choose a purifier that delivers your preferred ACH in the actual room volume. For an eight-foot ceiling, the basic relationship is:

There is no single universally correct ACH for every pet home. One air change per hour is slow background recirculation. Two to three ACH provides more frequent particle removal. ACH, CADR, and coverage: three numbers that answer different questions

Air-purifier listings often place a large square-foot figure near the top of the page. That figure is easy to compare, but it does not tell you how quickly the unit can clean a particular room unless the test assumptions are also stated. ACH, CADR, and coverage are connected, yet each answers a different question.

What is CADR?

Clean air delivery rate estimates the volume of filtered air an air cleaner delivers. In the United States it is commonly shown in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. A higher CADR means more cleaned air can be supplied each minute under the relevant rating conditions. CADR is more useful than fan wattage or a vague “powerful airflow” claim because it can be inserted directly into room-volume math.

CADR is not the same as raw fan airflow. A filter adds resistance, and performance can change with fan speed, filter loading, placement, and room layout. When comparing models, use a disclosed CADR rather than assuming that the highest fan speed or largest grille produces a specific clean-air volume. What is ACH?

Air changes per hour describes how many times an amount of clean air equal to the room’s volume is delivered in one hour. If a 4,000-cubic-foot room receives 8,000 cubic feet of cleaned air per hour, the theoretical rate is 2 ACH. The word “theoretical” matters: real rooms do not mix perfectly. Furniture, corners, doorways, people, pets, and HVAC airflow create uneven circulation.

ACH makes competing coverage claims comparable. Two brands may advertise different maximum areas for similar CADR values because they use different turnover assumptions. Recalculate both at the same ceiling height and ACH before deciding that one has more useful coverage.

What does advertised coverage mean?

Coverage is a floor-area claim tied to an unstated or stated cleaning interval, ceiling height, and fan setting. A purifier may technically circulate a very large room once in a long period while serving a much smaller room several times during that same period. Both figures can be mathematically possible, but they describe different experiences.

For a pet household, ask two follow-up questions whenever you see “covers up to”:

  • At what ACH, test duration, ceiling height, and speed was that area calculated?
  • Is the goal slow whole-room background filtration or faster cleanup in a pet’s main zone?

The answer determines whether the advertised maximum is relevant to your use case.

How to calculate pet air purifier room size

You need four inputs: length, width, ceiling height, and purifier CADR. Measure connected areas rather than treating an open-plan living room, kitchen, and hallway as separate sealed rooms.

Step 1: calculate floor area

Multiply room length by room width. A room measuring 25 feet by 20 feet has 500 square feet of floor area. For an L-shaped room, divide it into rectangles, calculate each area, and add them together.

Step 2: calculate room volume

Multiply floor area by the average ceiling height. A 500-square-foot room with an eight-foot ceiling contains about 4,000 cubic feet. The same floor area with a ten-foot ceiling contains 5,000 cubic feet, so it needs 25 percent more clean-air delivery to achieve the same ACH.

Step 3: calculate theoretical ACH

ACH = CADR in CFM × 60 ÷ room volume in cubic feet.

Suppose a purifier is rated at 188 CFM. In a 4,000-cubic-foot room, the calculation is 188 × 60 ÷ 4,000 = 2.82 ACH. In a 10,000-cubic-foot open area, it is 1.13 ACH. Use the rated CADR as a comparison input, then allow a margin for lower everyday fan settings, filter loading, imperfect mixing, and obstructions.

Step 4: reverse the formula when shopping

If you know the room volume and target ACH, calculate the needed CADR:

Required CADR in CFM = room volume × target ACH ÷ 60.

A 500-square-foot room with an eight-foot ceiling has a 4,000-cubic-foot volume. It needs about 200 CFM for 3 ACH and about 333 CFM for 5 ACH. This reverse calculation prevents a maximum-coverage badge from becoming your only selection criterion.

Worked examples for 500, 1,000, and 2,200 square feet

Actual results vary with fan speed, filter condition, placement, air mixing, doors, and other sources of particles.

Example 1: 500-square-foot living room

Room volume is 500 × 8 = 4,000 cubic feet. Theoretical ACH is 188 × 60 ÷ 4,000 = 2.82. That means the rated clean-air volume is roughly equivalent to the room volume 2.8 times per hour.

This is a plausible working zone for one PP02 when the goal is frequent background filtration in a living room where pets spend time. It is not a promise that every strand of fur will be captured. Example 2: 1,000-square-foot open area

Room volume is 1,000 × 8 = 8,000 cubic feet. Theoretical ACH is 188 × 60 ÷ 8,000 = 1.41. One unit can provide slow background recirculation, but it will not deliver the same cleaning speed as it does in 500 square feet.

An open plan also complicates mixing. A kitchen exhaust, stairwell, HVAC return, or long corridor can pull air away from the purifier. If the area contains several pet zones, two correctly placed units may create more consistent capture paths than one unit at an edge. Do not simply double the advertised square footage when adding a second purifier; assess the rooms, doorways, and zones each unit actually serves.

Example 3: 2,200-square-foot maximum claim

Using 188 CFM, the theoretical rate is 188 × 60 ÷ 17,600 = 0.64 ACH. In other words, the maximum claim describes much slower turnover than the 500-square-foot example.

This does not make the number meaningless. It shows what it means. A buyer who wants gentle background circulation across a large, open space may accept a slow turnover. A buyer who wants several clean-air equivalents per hour in a pet’s main room should size to a smaller area, choose more CADR, or use multiple units. Ceiling height changes the result again: at ten feet, the 2,200-square-foot volume rises to 22,000 cubic feet and the theoretical rate falls to about 0.51 ACH.

Five pet-home factors that change the sizing decision

1. Airborne hair and settled fur behave differently

Visible fur is relatively large and often settles before crossing a room. Place an intake where normal activity can carry loose hair toward it, while preserving the clearance required by the product instructions. Continue vacuuming floors, sofas, pet beds, and baseboards. 2. Dander can remain airborne longer than hair

A higher recirculation rate can increase the chance that suspended particles reach the filter. 3. Odor control depends on media and source control

Particle CADR does not fully describe gas or odor performance. Carbon media needs contact with odor molecules, and capacity is finite. Clean litter boxes, wash pet bedding, address accidents, and ventilate appropriately rather than expecting a purifier to neutralize an ongoing source. 4. Multiple pets increase loading and maintenance

Two shedding pets do not change the room’s cubic volume, but they can increase the rate at which hair and dust load the pre-filter. A loaded filter may restrict airflow, so the useful CADR over time depends on inspection and maintenance. Check the pre-filter more often during seasonal shedding, after grooming, or when the purifier sits near a favorite pet bed. 5. Closed rooms and open plans need different strategies

A closed bedroom creates a defined volume and predictable recirculation path. A 1,000-square-foot “space” connected to a kitchen, stairs, and hallway may exchange air with much more of the home. Measure the connected volume and map where pets sleep, where people spend time, and where doors remain open. One purifier cannot provide the same clean-air rate in several closed rooms at once. A correct calculation can still underperform if the purifier is boxed into a corner. Use a pet-zone map

Plan around the speed you will actually use

Room-size calculations normally use the rated airflow condition, which may correspond to a high fan setting. If you intend to run sleep mode all day, do not assume the maximum CADR. A practical strategy is continuous operation at a tolerable speed, with a higher setting after vacuuming, grooming, cooking, opening doors, or other activity that disturbs particles. Recalculate after layout changes

Moving from a closed 350-square-foot bedroom to a 700-square-foot living room halves theoretical ACH if ceiling height and CADR remain the same. Opening the room to a hallway can increase the effective volume again. Recalculate when moving, remodeling, combining rooms, or changing the unit count.

Use two units as two zones, not one abstract number

Two identical purifiers provide twice the combined rated CADR only when their airflows serve the intended volume effectively. Assigning one to the living room and one to a bedroom often makes more sense than placing both together. For a single large open plan, separation can reduce stagnant areas.
